What runners say

Running through the Bologna Apennine valleys on trails that cross three regions, knowing that every step counts towards the UTMB World Series, is the kind of race that makes you realise how much Italian trail running is still waiting to be discovered.

Why it's special

The sixth edition of the Bologna Marathon in Trail: three FIDAL distances (16, 30 and 43 km) in the heart of the Sillaro, Idice and Santerno valleys, between Emilia, Romagna and Tuscany. The Long and Ultra distances are qualifying races for the UTMB World Series.

What's around

The Bologna Marathon in Trail takes place on 20 September, starting and finishing at the Villaggio della Salute Più in Monterenzio, at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The course winds through the Sillaro, Idice and Santerno valleys — a territory still little known even to Italians, made up of hiking trails and dirt tracks through forests and badlands. Three FIDAL competitive distances: Short 16 km (600 m D+), Long 30 km (1,100 m D+) and Ultra 43 km (1,600 m D+). The Long and Ultra distances are qualifying races for the UTMB World Series: the 30 km awards one ITRA point, the 43 km awards two. Maximum 750 participants in total. Outside Emilia-Romagna it is almost unknown. And yet it is one of the most complete trail races on the central-northern Italian calendar, through an Apennine landscape that surprises with its variety and beauty.
