What runners say
Running through a city that has turned its coal mines into museums and its canals into parks makes you realise something: the most interesting cities aren't always the most famous ones. Essen proves it kilometre by kilometre.
Why it's special
A marathon in the heart of the Ruhr, between UNESCO World Heritage industrial monuments and urban lakes: Essen is the city that turned its coal-mining past into culture and landscape.
What's around
The Essen Marathon runs through the heart of the Ruhr, Europe's densest industrial region, in a city that has completely reinvented itself over recent decades. The course crosses the historic centre, with its architecture blending industrial heritage and modernity, passing close to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Germany's most visited cultural destinations. Two formats: the full marathon (solo or relay) and an 18 km race, both suited to runners of all levels. After the race, Essen has plenty to offer: Lake Baldeney for relaxing, the Rüttenscheid district with its cafés and art galleries, and the clock tower for those who want a panoramic view of the city. Outside Germany it's practically unknown. And yet Essen is one of the most surprising cities in Europe — and running through it is the best way to find out.
