What runners say
Running 21 km with the Mediterranean on your right and finishing on the beach with sand under your feet is something no city marathon can give you. It's the reason why, once you've done this race, you come back.
Why it's special
The only half marathon in the world running through so many blue flag beaches: 21 km from Alicante to Santa Pola, hugging the Mediterranean coastline the whole way, finishing right on the beach.
What's around
The Gran Carrera del Mediterráneo takes place on 8 November from Alicante to Santa Pola, along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Spain. The course starts from the centre of Alicante and runs parallel to the sea for its entire length, passing through Parque El Palmeral, the beaches of Urbanova, Arenales del Sol and El Carabassí, and on to the Santa Pola lighthouse. The finish line is on Varadero beach, with the Mediterranean as backdrop. It is the only race in the world that passes through so many blue flag beaches in a single course. A half marathon officially certified by the Real Federación Española de Atletismo — with official timing and a national ranking. Outside Spain it's practically unknown. And yet this is one of the most spectacular coastal race courses in Europe, with the sea present from start to finish.
