What runners say
Running the oldest marathon in Italy through a Tuscan valley that witnessed the Medici and the great Renaissance painters is something the big city marathons can never give you. History is not built — it is run.
Why it's special
The oldest marathon in Italy, born in 1974 in the heart of Tuscany: 48 pioneers at the first edition, today a historic event immersed in the Mugello landscapes that tell the story of the Medici, Giotto and Fra Angelico.
What's around
The Maratona del Mugello was born on 21 September 1974, when a group of 48 enthusiasts from G.S. Marciatori Borgo San Lorenzo decided to organise the first popular marathon in Italy — at a time when marathons existed only for elite athletes selected by the federation. It was the first. Ever. From those 48 pioneers, by 1975 there were already 205 participants, by 1976 there were 502, then over 1,000. Over the years runners arrived from France, Hungary, Germany and Switzerland. A small rural marathon that became international. The course crosses the Tuscan countryside a few kilometres from Florence, through a valley that tells the story of the Medici, the art of Giotto di Bondone and Fra Angelico. Beautiful, simple, authentic. The Maratona del Mugello did not grow to become a big business — it stayed true to itself. And that is exactly why it is worth running.
